Boycott murder and mayhem

I give up. A movie buff since the 1920s, when my mother took me by the hand to matinees at the Dreamland, I’m giving up on movies. It’s like abandoning a dear friend, one who has provided nourishment, delight–but no longer. I’m starting a boycott. Why?

A majority of American movies promote violence and foul language. In place of dialogue, we hear the 4-letter word ad infinitum, the gunning down of people, the explosion of bombs, crashes of cars. To top everything, violence as entertainment won many votes by Academy Award judges this year. A movie brimming with violence, “No Country for Old Men,” won top honors in the best picture category. Daniel Day-Lewis in the savage film, “There Will Be Blood,” won the best actor award for a role of senseless brutality. Foreign movies provided needed relief, one from Egypt and one from France–no guns, no explosions just ordinary human relations.

Hollywood, put aside the guns and bring us some romance, comedy, happy endings!
