Italian, or English?

I grew up with two languages and for the first 5 years of my life spoke and heard only Italian until I started school and learned English. Both my parents came from Italy in their teens, and Italian was the language they spoke. When you grow up with two languages, strange things happen. Oddly, I find that when I can’t think of a word in English, I remember it in Italian. This is hardly appreciated by non-Italian speaking Americans, except for Italophiles. But how many of them are around? What I could do is attend more lectures at the Casa Italiana at Columbia University, usually given by Italians in Italian, and have the opportunity to speak the language to anyone present. Either that, or keep my Italian mouth closed.
